Het Vaticaan kondigde eerder deze week aan dat het Circo Medrano 2.100 gratis plaatsen beschikbaar zou stellen voor de speciale gasten van de paus. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) reageerde vrijwel direct: ‘His Holiness' concern for the downtrodden must rightly extend to the wild animals who have been taken from their homelands and are enslaved, caged, chained and beaten so that they'll perform tricks that baffle and stress them.’ PETA riep de paus in 2015 nog uit tot Person of the Year, vanwege zijn naam (St. Francis is de beschermheilige van dieren) en vanwege zijn uitspraak ‘Every act of cruelty towards any creature is contrary to human dignity.’ De uitspraak strookt volgens de organisatie niet met het bezoek aan het circus.
Dat circus reageerde ook, bij monde van Brian Casartelli. ‘One animal does a five-minute exhibition in a show, the rest of the time we are in training or they are out in the open and we have studied and made a plan with veterinarians in how to best treat the animals.’ Het Vaticaan wilde niet reageren.
